About The Event

Tom Crewe’s debut novel, The New Life, is a magnificent first novel of forbidden love and new ways of living set in 1890’s London. It has been praised for its tenderness, and forensic insight into love.

The story revolves around John and Henry, whose shared vision for the future unites them to write a revolutionary book in defiance of convention and the law. Their daring book threatens to throw John and Henry and all those around them into danger. How far should they go to win personal freedoms?

‘We must live in the future we hope to make’ - Tom Crewe.

Tom will be in conversation with Simon Richardson, BBC Media and Arts Producer.

The event will last about hour and will include an audience Q and A. It will be followed by a book signing.

‘Filled with nuance and tenderness… charting the lives of men and women who inspired not only political progress but an entire new way of living and loving’ – Colm Tóibín.

‘A very fine new writer’ – Kate Atkinson
