About The Event

We are delighted to present a special screening of the critically acclaimed Martin Eden (2019), an adaptation of Jack London's 1909 novel, itself a literary sensation, by Italian director Pietro Marcello and starring Luca Marinelli in the title role.

The novel, which  made Jack London one of the first authors of the 20th century to make a fortune from his writing and to gain a celebrity status, was daringly moved  from California to Naples in Marcello’s film. The dark and uncompromising story of an aspiring working class writer in intense pursuit of self-education and recognition by the literary elite had an unprecedented insight into the modern times - and Pietro Marcello's multi-layered, vibrant adaptation which echoes Luchino Visconti, has been the most successful cinematic interpretations of the book.

In her introductory talk Olga Mamonova, Artistic Director of Kino-Teatr and author of three non-fiction books, reveals the secrets of Martin Eden's  timeless appeal and why its latest screen version is the strongest and most original in history of the novel's film adaptations.
